Meet Our People

Dr. Andrew Johnstone, RPh, M.D.

Dr. Johnstone began his Family Practice in the Greenwood and Indianapolis area in 1988 after completing his residency at St. Francis Hospital. He graduated magna cum laude from the Indiana University School of Medicine, following earlier graduation at the top of his class from the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy. Long before formal training, however, he was a kid roaming the hills and ponds of southern Indiana, studying wildlife whenever he could get out of doing chores.

From the beginning, his interests have leaned toward preventing illness rather than relying on last ditch treatment. He believes this approach maximizes health and enjoyment of life while also minimizing overall health care costs. That philosophy has often placed him at odds with the modern health insurance bureaucracy, which tends to penalize physicians who spend meaningful time with patients or provide individualized care instead of rigidly following institutional protocols and flowcharts.

As a result, Dr. Johnstone has chosen to remain strongly independent, practicing as a professional rather than an employee. This independence has allowed him to maintain lifelong relationships with many patients for more than three decades, often spanning multiple generations. The mutual trust and respect that develop through long term partnerships lead to better communication and, ultimately, more effective and efficient delivery of high quality health care for patients and their families.

Dr. Johnstone prefers to practice alongside a nurse practitioner. He believes that two sets of eyes and two minds, coming from different educational backgrounds and evaluating the same patient, greatly reduce the risk of important medical issues being overlooked. This approach also allows him to focus on the most complex and challenging diagnostic and therapeutic situations, while the nurse practitioner helps manage routine concerns and the inevitable surges of illness when viruses are circulating through the community.

Rather than adopting the lucrative model of four minute visits limited to a single problem, squeezing in thirty or more patients per day, and requiring multiple follow up appointments for related issues, Dr. Johnstone believes in treating the whole person. Most medical conditions are interconnected, and addressing them together makes more sense. The result is fewer visits per year, but visits that are longer and more comprehensive, with fewer co pays, fewer missed workdays, and lower overall health care costs over a lifetime. Most importantly, patients achieve better overall health. In this model, the patient is a true partner in their care, not just a name and policy number.

As much of primary care shifted toward hospital employment and third party control, some physicians turned to various forms of alternative medicine in an effort to practice differently. Unfortunately, profit driven gimmicks have found their way into alternative medicine just as they have into conventional medicine. Dr. Johnstone believes selectivity and balance are essential. He has found many principles of alternative medicine to be sound and helpful, while also recognizing the value of traditional allopathic medicine when appropriate. Rejecting either entirely is irrational. Instead, he draws from both, along with other influences, to create individualized health care plans that patients understand and feel comfortable following.

Dr. Johnstone is deeply grateful for his patients, who come from a wide range of educational backgrounds, occupations, income levels, and perspectives on health care. They remain a constant source of inspiration and learning. He readily acknowledges that many of the most practical lessons he has learned over the years have come directly from patients, particularly regarding diet, nutritional supplements, exercise, relaxation techniques, realistic medication routines, and even self examination of the breasts and skin.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Johnstone enjoys being outdoors bird watching, planting native shrubs for wildlife, organic gardening, and raising goats and free range chickens, along with what he jokingly refers to as raising free range venison through deer hunting. When indoors, he enjoys reading, especially the works of James Alexander Thom, who wrote extensively about Indiana during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He is also active in promoting firearms safety and educating both the public and legislators about the public health aspects of firearms ownership.
If your goal as a patient is health care that is truly individualized and based on what is best for you rather than what is best for your insurance company, you will likely find Johnstone Family Practice to be a good fit.
